A Day Exploring Midcentury Galleries in the Netherlands

With my boyfriend being Dutch, I’ve been splitting my time between London and Amsterdam lately.
On a recent trip, I was sourcing vintage pieces for one of our studio projects when I stumbled upon two amazing mid-century furniture galleries in the Netherlands.
Naturally, off we went!
Our first stop was Asperen to visit OBJEKT, a gallery specialising in high-end European and Scandinavian mid-century design.
Stepping into their warehouse felt like entering a whole new world.
It is a treasure trove packed with exceptional, original-condition pieces — from rare lighting fixtures to statement seating and architectural tables.
Walking through the space, you're greeted by iconic designs from heavyweights like Tobia Scarpa, Gerrit Rietveld, and Alvar Aalto, alongside beautifully preserved Dutch modernist and Italian post-modern gems.
Every corner holds something with a distinct silhouette and a story to tell.
The owners are a lovely couple whose passion is infectious.
What originally started as collecting a few personal mid-century items for their own home completely spiralled… and they simply couldn't stop.
It’s exactly the kind of passion-driven sourcing trip that makes what we do so rewarding!
Back in the car, we headed to our next stop: Morentz Gallery in Waalwijk.
Housed in a spectacular 1930s former Van Haren shoe factory, the venue spans a staggering 23,500 square metres.
It isn't just a space to browse—it’s a living design ecosystem, combining a massive, gallery-style showroom with a state-of-the-art restoration atelier and upholstery studio.
Seeing master artisans at work preserving mid-century heritage on-site added a whole new layer of appreciation to the visit.
The moment you step into the main hall, you’re instantly captivated by the original, vibrant stained-glass windows, which cast soft, coloured light across the entire room.
As you wander through the space, you're met with an incredible collection of rare, collectible furniture.
What makes Morentz so special is how they curate it: rather than lined up like museum relics, the pieces are styled together in immersive, living vignettes that immediately get your creative mind racing.
It was an absolute feast of inspiration for rich material palettes, bespoke details, and the effortless pairing of classic and avant-garde designs.
After taking in the main gallery, we were guided into the heart of the operation: the master warehouse.
Calling it a "warehouse" hardly does it justice—it felt like stepping into an endless, beautifully curated archive of design history.
Row after row of mid-century masterpieces, rare prototypes, and sculptural seating were meticulously displayed, each piece given the space it needed to breathe.
It was a true behind-the-scenes look at the sheer scale of their collection.
Seeing hundreds of museum-quality designs organized with such precision made the experience even more inspiring, leaving us with a wealth of ideas to bring back to our studio projects in London.
The final stop on our tour was the upholstery studio—and for a designer, this was pure magic.
We got a true peek behind the curtain to see how these iconic mid-century pieces are painstakingly brought back to life.
Watching the master craftspeople at work, honoring original techniques while precision-tailoring each frame, was incredible.
We also spent time poring over their extensive library of luxury textiles, buttery leathers, and tactile bouclés.
Seeing how the right fabric choice can completely transform a piece, bridging the gap between vintage heritage and contemporary living, was the perfect ending to an unforgettable sourcing trip.
One our way back to Amsterdam a double rainbow surprised us! What an amazing was to end this adventurous day!
